Should you fix an echoey room with acoustic ceilings or walls?

: It depends on the type of echo encountered and the physical constraints of the room. There is no definitive answer that ceilings are always better than walls, or vice versa. In general, rooms with widespread echo distributed throughout the space (Reverberation) are usually most effectively treated by starting withthe ceiling due to its larger surface area. Meanwhile, rooms with two distinctly parallel walls and directional slapping echoes (Flutter Echo) typically need to be addressed primarily atthe walls. Rooms with complex issues or high acoustic requirements often require both solutions used together. Accurate diagnosis should take into account room geometry, ceiling height, and on-site listening tests.


Before deciding whether to solve an echo problem with ceilings or walls, the first step is to understand what kind of "echo" you are dealing with. There is more than one type of echo, and each responds differently to ceiling versus wall treatments. This article provides a preliminary diagnosis before you choose the solution that truly fits your room.


A simple test before deciding: What kind of echo are you experiencing?

Try standing in the middle of the room and clapping once, then listen to the resulting sound.

  • If you hear a prolonged, distributed echo throughout the room, similar to a church or large hall, this is Reverberation. It is caused by hard surfaces throughout the room reflecting sound back and forth until it builds up, typically a problem in spaces with large volume and many hard surfaces.

  • If you hear a rapid, rhythmic series of reflections like a short, continuous "ping-ping-ping", this is Flutter Echo. It is caused by sound bouncing back and forth between two parallel and exceptionally smooth walls, typically a problem in narrow rectangular rooms with parallel smooth surfaces.

Distinguishing between these two types immediately points to initial options. Reverberation is usually best solved by adding large absorptive areas like a ceiling, whereas Flutter Echo typically requires breaking the reflection cycle directly at the walls to fully resolve.


Signs indicating you should start with the ceiling

  • The room has higher-than-average ceilings, causing sound to travel far and accumulate significant energy before reflecting back.

  • The walls feature a high proportion of windows, glass, or doors, leaving limited wall space for actually installing sound-absorbing materials.

  • The room has an asymmetrical shape or non-parallel walls, making Reverberation the primary issue rather than Flutter Echo.

  • You want to control your budget to maximize absorptive surface area per square meter invested.

Signs indicating you should start with the walls

  • The room has two distinctly parallel walls with hard, smooth surfaces, such as glass or smooth concrete, which is the classic condition for Flutter Echo.

  • The ceiling is very low, leaving insufficient space for additional ceiling installation, or the ceiling structure is unmodifiable.

  • There are fixed speaking and listening positions, such as a conference table or listening spot, making the first reflection points on the walls more impactful on sound quality than general absorption area ratios.
