📖 Project Story — When an International School Demands Perfection in Every Dimension

NIST International School is one of Thailand's leading international schools, placing great emphasis on the quality of its learning environment down to every detail. When it came to designing the ceilings for their learning spaces, the brief was not simply to "finish the ceiling."

Instead, it was to "create a ceiling that looks great, absorbs sound, and blends seamlessly with the overall interior design."

The design featured both gypsum ceiling zones that provide a clean and continuous look, and ceiling pockets that add dimension and depth. The question was how to integrate an acoustic system into this design without ruining everything that had been planned.



🔧 The Untold Technique — T-Bars in Ceiling Pockets

What most people do — In standard ceiling design, when a ceiling pocket is present, the choice usually comes down to two options.

First, make it all gypsum — beautiful and clean, but lacking acoustics.

Second, make it all T-bar — acoustically effective, but sacrificing the intended design. That is what forces many projects to make compromises.


What NIST School chose — T-Bars in Ceiling Pockets combined with Gypsum Ceilings

The technique applied in this project involved installing a T-bar system inside the pre-designed ceiling pockets, using the pockets as a neat frame to contain the grid system, while the surrounding areas remained as standard gypsum ceilings per the original design.

The result is a ceiling featuring two interacting levels: a gypsum ceiling providing continuity and a clean aesthetic, paired with ceiling pockets neatly concealing acoustic T-bars within, looking like an intentional part of the design rather than an afterthought.




    




🛠 Material Choice — Trandar Star 600x1200mm Square Edge

Choosing the 600x1200mm square-edge Trandar Star for this project was no coincidence, but a carefully considered decision.

The 600x1200mm size provides ideal proportions for the designed ceiling recess—not too heavy, not too cluttered, and ensuring a visually consistent T-bar grid pattern.

The Square Edge is the key to this technique, as it allows the joints between the Trandar Star panels and the edges of the skim-coated ceiling recess to appear clean, precise, and continuous, with no awkward or uneven joints.

When these two systems meet—the T-bar within the ceiling recess meeting the skim-coated ceiling at the perimeter—the square edge of the Trandar Star turns the joint into an integrated design feature rather than a visual distraction.




🔊 Acoustic Performance — How Trandar Star Works Within the Ceiling Recess

The acoustic behavior when installing Trandar Star inside the ceiling recess is more interesting than expected.

The ceiling recess creates a plenum space (air cavity) above the Trandar Star panels, which further enhances low-frequency sound absorption. Sound waves traveling upward to hit the Trandar Star panels are absorbed both by the panels themselves and the plenum space behind them.

The result is higher sound absorption efficiency compared to standard single-plane T-bar installations, without adding extra materials or costs. The ceiling recess, originally designed for aesthetics, naturally contributes to acoustic performance.




    




🎨 Overall Impression — Two Systems, One Design Language

What makes this project compelling from a design perspective is that looking up at the ceiling, the eye does not separate "this is the acoustic part" from "this is the design part."

Everything reads as a single language—

The skim-coated ceiling provides a continuous, clean white surface framing the recess housing the Trandar Star. The T-bar grid visible within the recess adds dimension and depth, while the square edge of the Trandar Star meeting the recess perimeter makes the dividing line between the two systems distinct and aesthetically pleasing on its own.

Nothing looks like an afterthought—everything appears conceived together from the start.



The Outcome — A Learning Space Combining Sound and Design

Upon completion, the learning spaces at NIST School feature a ceiling that meets every dimensional requirement expected of a world-class international school.

Echoes within the space are significantly reduced thanks to the performance of the Trandar Star within the ceiling recess, while the overall ceiling remains beautiful, clean, and dimensional precisely as intended by the design. Students and teachers enjoy better speech clarity, and the space exudes a world-class institutional feel that pays attention to every detail.
