📖 Project Story — When an International School Demands a Perfect Ceiling in Every Dimension
NIST International School is one of Thailand's leading international schools, emphasizing the quality of the learning environment in every detail. When it came time to design the ceilings in the learning areas, the brief wasn't just "finish the ceiling."
Instead, it was "create a ceiling that looks good, absorbs sound, and perfectly blends with the overall interior design."
The design included both plasterboard ceiling zones, providing a clean look and continuity of space, and recessed ceilings, creating depth and dimension for the ceiling. The question was how to incorporate an acoustic system into this design without compromising everything that had been planned.
🔧 The Unspoken Technique — T-bar in Recessed Ceiling
What most people do — In general ceiling design, when a recessed ceiling is part of the plan, there are usually only two options.
The first option is to do all plasterboard — beautiful, clean, but no acoustics.
The second option is to do all T-bar — effective in terms of sound, but sacrificing the intended design.And that's what many projects have to compromise on.
What NIST School chose — T-bar in recessed ceiling combined with plasterboard ceiling.
The technique used in this project was to install the T-bar system inside the pre-designed recessed ceiling, with the recessed ceiling acting as a frame that neatly encloses the T-bar system, while the surrounding area remains a plasterboard ceiling according to the original design.
The result is a ceiling that visibly showcases two cooperating levels: a plasterboard ceiling providing continuity and a clean look, and a recessed ceiling with sound-absorbing T-bars neatly concealed within, appearing as an integral part of the design, not something added later.

Choosing Trandar Star 600x1200mm with a square edge for this project was not a coincidence, but a meticulously thought-out decision.
The 600x1200mm size provides appropriate proportions for the designed recessed ceiling, not too large to appear heavy, not too small to seem cluttered, and creates a consistent T-bar grid pattern.
The square edge is the key to this technique, as it makes the joint line between the Trandar Star panels and the edge of the plasterboard recessed ceiling look clean, precise, and continuous, with no clashing or uneven joints.
When two systems meet — the T-bar in the recessed ceiling meets the plasterboard ceiling at the edge — the square edge of Trandar Star makes that joint an integral part of the design, not an eyesore.
🔊 Acoustic Aspect — What Trandar Star Does Within the Recessed Ceiling
What happens acoustically when Trandar Star is installed in a recessed ceiling is more interesting than one might think.
The recessed ceiling creates a Plenum Space or air cavity above the Trandar Star panels, which serves to further enhance low-frequency sound absorption. Sound traveling up to the Trandar Star panels is absorbed both by the panels themselves and by the Plenum Space behind them.
The result is higher sound absorption efficiency than typical single-level T-bar installations, without adding any extra materials or costs, because the recessed ceiling, designed for aesthetics, simultaneously becomes an acoustic aid.

Reverberation in the area has significantly reduced thanks to the performance of Trandar Star in the recessed ceilings, while the overall ceiling aesthetic remains beautiful, clean, and dimensional, exactly as designed. Students and teachers can hear each other more clearly, and the space evokes the feeling of a world-class institution that pays attention to every detail.
